“I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS SAYING…”

Dedicated to “AO” and to all strong mothers and fathers who stayed

Last night, I was on the phone with a single mother whose little boy, just over five years old, has autism.

While we were talking, I could hear him in the background. He was screaming, crying, and repeatedly trying to say something neither his mother nor I could understand.

He wanted something. He was desperately trying to communicate it, but the words would not come out clearly. His frustration grew, his voice became louder, and his mother kept trying to understand.

Then came the moment I will not easily forget.

With exhaustion and helplessness in her voice, she said,

“Uncle Femi, I don’t understand what he is saying. I don’t know what he wants.”

For a moment, I became silent.

I could hear more than a child crying. I could hear a mother carrying a weight few people ever see. She told me this happens often, that he becomes restless and cries when she cannot understand him.

She has had to give up so much of her work, freedom, and social life because caring for him requires almost everything she has.

As she spoke, her voice began to break. And on my end of the phone, I almost broke down too. I found myself thinking: How many mothers and fathers are living this same story tonight, behind closed doors, exhausted and unseen?

To Every Parent Carrying a Weight the World Cannot See

There are battles for which nobody gives medals. There are parents who wake up tired because they hardly slept, yet somehow find the strength to smile at their child in the morning.

There are mothers who have quietly surrendered careers, friendships, sleep, finances, dreams, and pieces of themselves to care for a child who needs them differently.

There are fathers carrying questions they cannot answer and fears they rarely speak aloud.

If that is your story, please remember this: your child’s challenges do not make their life less valuable, and the difficulty of the journey does not make your love less beautiful.

Some victories will never make the news, a new word, a calmer morning, a successful appointment, a meal finally eaten, a hug freely given, or simply making it through another difficult night, but they are victories nonetheless.

Some of life’s greatest heroes are known not by the crowds that applaud them, but by the child who knows they will still be there tomorrow.

A parent’s greatest courage is sometimes nothing more than getting up one more morning and choosing love again.

When progress is measured in inches, never allow the world to convince you that those inches are insignificant.

The tears you wipe in private are part of a love story the world may never fully understand

And when you become tired, and you will, remember that being strong does not mean never needing help. Seek support. Accept respite when it is available. Build a community around yourself and your child

.Celebrate progress without comparing your child with anyone else’s timetable. Give yourself permission to rest without feeling that you have abandoned your responsibility. Your child needs your love, but you also need care, compassion, and people who will help carry the load.

And for those whose faith gives them strength, remember that heaven does not measure your parenting by how perfect your days look; it sees the love behind the struggle, the sacrifices nobody applauds, and the tears nobody witnesses.

Heaven sees the parent whose hands keep serving long after the heart has become tired.

A difficult chapter is not permission to write a hopeless ending.

Your child’s journey may follow a different road, but different does not mean without destination

When you cannot change the road your child must travel, become the love that makes the road less lonely

So, to the mother who whispered to me last night, “I don’t understand what he is saying,” and to every parent who has ever cried those words in one form or another: you are not alone.

There may be days when you do not understand the sounds.

Days when you do not understand the behavior.

Days when you do not understand why this journey became yours.

But your child understands something deeper than words:

You stayed.
You cared.
You kept trying.
You loved.

And sometimes, before a child can ever find the words to tell you what you mean to them, your presence has already said everything.
